If everything around you seems dark, look again, you may be the light – Rumi
The past few days have been difficult. On Election Day, we collectively held our breath, carrying the hopes and dreams of equality and representation in our hearts. However, instead of celebrating, we watched another extraordinarily qualified woman crack—but not break—the highest, hardest glass ceiling left in the country. As the polls closed and results rolled in, we quickly realized that despite how far we have come, not everyone agreed this was the right time, and the change we seek would instead continue to be a goal on the horizon.
This election was hard, and it was heartbreaking, and it’s okay—even healthy— to give yourself a few days to mourn. But don’t stay there, because it also renews the importance of our work. As Gloria Feldt wrote, “We must amass our power for good, stay true to our authentic values, and overcome the cultural tow that keeps dragging Americans back to their basest emotions. Our cause and our work are more important than ever.”
Those of you who have been in the trenches working for equality understand that Rome was not built in a day, and in the scheme of things, this campaign cycle wasn’t much more than that. Just know that whether you worked phone banks, knocked on doors, talked to your friends, or drove your neighbors to the polls, you made a difference. Whether you pushed for a specific ballot initiative or a local candidate, your work mattered. It still does.
What we have done during this election cycle is important, but it’s nothing compared to the crucial role that our connections play today and every day. We are processing our feelings, and the post-election text messages, phone calls, Zoom calls, coffee dates, and in-person gatherings are happening and helping us heal. Despite our shock and disappointment, we’re making plans for next month, next year, and the next election cycle. Right now, we need each other and should reach out to our valuable partners and collaborators, our sisters, our daughters, and our friends. Isolation is a killer. We are so much stronger together.
At Women Connect4Good, our commitment to achieving gender equality and empowering women to lead has never been stronger. Whether it’s a school board seat, a local or statewide initiative, an educational opportunity, or another rung on the career ladder, we are focused on the advancement of women. We’ve leaned in and now we’re lifting up. It’s time to speak up, stand our ground, support each other, use our voices, and continue to push for equality because we know that women are the solution.
