Fundraising: 10 Overview Tips

It’s not brain surgery, but if it is to succeed, fundraising requires special attention to certain basics. Review these top 10 tips to give your fundraiser better results.

1. Provide as much value as possible

More value means more prospects, more buyers or donors, and more money for your cause.

2. Articulate your value proposition

State exactly what your fundraiser is about and why no more than two sentences. Give a compelling call to action. Use this in every web post, email, phone and face-to-face call.

3. Set a public goal

Commit publicly to a fundraising goal. Aim as high as possible within a realistic range. Structure your sales efforts to emphasize and reward achievement of that goal.

4. Spread the ownership

Provide meaningful participation in planning and execution so everyone takes ownership of the fundraiser’s success on an individual level.

5. Have fun

Plan for the FUN part of fundraising. They don’t have to volunteer or participate, so make sure they enjoy being there. Dump the drudgery and reward their involvement with fun at each stage.

6. Plan alternate ways to participate

Some people don’t like fundraisers but will contribute in other ways. Perhaps they’ll respond to an annual membership check or automatic monthly donations.

7. Don’t skimp on quality

Quality sales presentations and quality products give your group options they are proud to offer. Confident reps are more motivated, make more sales and have more success.

8. Manage your risks

Train to prevent unsafe selling practices and ensure volunteers of any age have adequate supervision. Safety is your highest priority.

9. Write up the project plan

The time it takes to write a plan is well-spent.  written project plan that spells out all roles and responsibilities. Slot motivated individuals into those roles and equip them with everything they need to do a great job.

10. Give back to partners

It will increase your organization’s visibility if you participate in your community. Brainstorm with your group to find other causes that have special meaning to your members.
