How To Lean In Without Burning Out

LeanInWebWomen’s empowerment is my mission, and that’s why I’m always on the lookout for ideas that will help us succeed at work, at home, and in our communities.

Women Feel Like They’re Falling Short

A recent article in FastCompany points out how women have greater opportunities than ever before, but are feeling stressed out, anxious, and exhausted trying to cope with the pressure to succeed, at work and in their private lives. Even with obvious external success, many women feel like they are still not measuring up or being good enough, and other women are leaning in so strongly that they are burning out. Finding a balance is key, so the question is, how do we lean in without burning out?

Women Need To Take Care Of Themselves

Taking care of your mental and emotional health is important, and taking the time to eat right, exercise, reduce your stress levels and find time to socialize and renew old friendships can go a long way towards your overall well being. Delegating at home and at work is also good: whether you hire someone to do your housework or pass that research project on to a co-worker, actively reducing stress will help avoid burnout.

Setting Goals Is Key

To avoid the guilt or pressure of delegating in the workplace, work cooperatively with your colleagues. When you offer to help your co-workers with their clients and projects, DO NOT feel guilty about asking for their help in return when you need it. And last but not least, make time for the important stuff. Set goals, both personally and professionally, and make sure YOUR goals receive equal attention with the priorities of others.

Women Can Lean In And Not Burn Out

It is possible to lean in without burning out, but you have to practice authenticity by creating balance in your life. That means you have the ability to choose what is important to you rather than what might be important to other people. To make the right choice, you need to be clear about your values and make choices that are in alignment with those deeper wants and needs.
