Bridging the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Divide

Dr. Jackie Glenn is a prominent force in the drive to make diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) a given in the workplace. For more than 30 years, Dr. Jackie has connected the dots between DE&I,  innovation, and profitability. Her work has influenced positive and lasting change in corporate culture, reinforcing diversity, equity and inclusion as a business imperative. Dr. Jackie’s convincing case for diversity, equity and inclusion as not only the right thing to do, but also a sound business decision, comes down to one simple concept. “The more diverse we are, the better we are as companies, as countries, as societies,” Dr. Glenn says.

She stresses the importance of fostering inclusive workplaces where every employee feels valued and empowered. “It’s about every person feeling that they are valued for their differences and what they bring to the table,” she emphasizes. This approach creates an environment where diverse perspectives can thrive, driving innovation, creativity, and collaboration, which in turn, translates into profitability and business success. Throughout her career, Dr. Jackie has been a vocal advocate for challenging stereotypes and breaking barriers in the corporate world. She encourages organizations to celebrate differences and cultivate empathy to build bridges between diverse perspectives. By doing so, companies can unlock the potential of their workforce and drive sustainable growth.

Lifting As She Climbed

Dr. Jackie’s strong desire to disrupt the status quo within corporate culture was informed and inspired by personal experience. Her book, Lift As I Climb: An Immigrant Girl’s Journey Through Corporate America,  chronicles her remarkable rise to success and provides an inspirational roadmap for those who would like to follow in her footsteps.

Her journey began at the age of 19 when Dr. Jackie left her home in Jamaica for the opportunity to work as a nanny in the United States. In her conversation with Dr. Nancy, Dr. Jackie reflects on the challenges she faced being a young woman of color in a predominantly white environment. She drew strength and resilience from the wisdom of her mother and leaned on what she describes as ten transformative “gems” from her upbringing. These gems, including authenticity, self-awareness, and trustworthiness, became her compass as she entered the corporate world and rose within the ranks, shattering her own glass ceiling and lifting others as she climbed.

Listen to or watch Dr. Nancy’s conversation with Dr. Jackie and learn more about her rise from teenage immigrant nanny to Chief Diversity Officer of a Fortune 100 company and corporate culture change-maker, and most important the “ten gems” that helped her along the way.
